Former Rep. Tom Perriello is running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Virginia. He’s running to the left of presumed favourite Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam. Incumbent Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) is term limited in that he can’t run for consecutive terms.
Perriello released a campaign ad hot on the heels of the GOP vote to pass TrumpCare. It shows an ambulance being flattened by an automobile compacter because, you know, if the bill becomes law it will have a crushing impact on healthcare on America.
Northam has the establishment behind him but Periello is polling well.
Republican frontrunner Ed Gillespie and the other GOP candidates support the GOP’s American Health Care Act.
The general election for the governor’s race in Virginia is in November 2017, so it could be an early indicator of how health care positions will play in the 2018 midterms.
Of course, we don’t know what will happen to the House bill when it gets to the Senate or if it will ever see the light of day in anything like its current form.
But we are going to hear a lot of language similar to this from people like Christina Freundlich, a spokesperson for the Virginia Democratic Party.
What we expect to see in Virginia this fall is a referendum on Trumpcare and the life-threatening decisions that Republicans are forcing Virginians to face. If this bill moves forward and becomes a law, the next governor of Virginia will decide whether they will jack up rates for those with preexisting conditions. We fully expect that the people of the commonwealth to stand up to the Trump-Gillespie agenda and elect another Democratic governor that will keep costs down and protections in place.
As for Perriello’s ad, who doesn’t ‘t like to see a car crushed in a compacter? Oddly satisfying.
