Random Jazz: J.J. Johnson – “Blue Trombone” (1957)

Blue Trombone is a 1957 jazz album by J. J. Johnson in the hard bop genre. The LP features Tommy Flanagan (piano), Paul Chambers (bass); and drummer Max Roach (drums). The ’57 release was on Columbia Records in 1957 and there was a reissued on CD by Tristar in 1994 (with additional cuts and musicians notes at the link above).

The track listing for the original album are Hello, Young Lovers; Kev; What’s New; Blue Trombone (Part 1); Blue Trombone (Part 2); Gone with the Wind, and; 100 Proof.

The Scott Yanow review at AllMusic says of Blue Trombone that “it shows listeners why [J.J. Johnson] is still considered one of the greatest jazz trombonists of all time.”
