The Congressional Leadership Fund, a conservative group, wasted no time releasing a new digital ad directed at Democrat Jon Ossoff in anticipation of the runoff election on June 20th. It attempts to link Ossoff to Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi, a woman Republicans love to hate.
Ossoff came up just short of avoiding a runoff on Tuesday when he fell a couple of points short of the 50 percent needed to win outright. He’ll face Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state.
Connecting Ossoff to Pelosi and the “liberal elite” will be the approach Republicans take. The truth is it will be hard for the Democrats to take a seat that has been held by Republicans since 1979, particularly in a one-on-one contest.
It’s worth noting that the candidates most connected to Trump fared poorly in last week’s election. It remains to be seen if they will be enthusiastic about voting in June.
It also remains to be seen how well the populist pitch will work as Trump moves closer and closer to a Washington-as-usual mode of governing. At a minimum it could depress Republucan turnout.
