As you may know, there will be a special election on April 18th to determine the member of the House of Representatives for Georgia’s 6th congressional district. Incumbent Tom Price resigned to become United States Secretary of Health and Human Services on February 10, 2017.
The way this election works is that all candidates will run on one ballot. If no candidate gets 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be held on June 20th for the first- and second-place finishers.
Polling conducted between March 27th and April 2nd shows Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year old investigative filmmaker, at 43%, a significant lead over all opponents. Republican Karen Handel, former Georgia Secretary of State, is in second place with 15%. If no one gets to 50% and it ends up being a runoff between Ossoff and Handel, Fox has a poll done near the end of March that shows the two in a dead heat with 17% undecided.
The District has been represented by a Republican consistently since 1979, the longest run in the state. This includes a stint by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich from 1979 to 1999.
As one would imagine, national Democrats would like to win this seat as indication of Trump’s failing presidency, which has led to eye-popping fund-rising numbers in part due to dozens of celebrities kicking in.
Ossoff’s raised a record $8.3 million that came from nearly 200,000 donors, though 95 percent of them are from out of state. He has $2.1 million cash on hand …
Fund-raising by the competition pales in comparison with Handel announcing that she brought in $463,000 and has more than $183,000 in her campaign account.
But Republicans are not going quietly:
“Jon Ossoff is riding a huge wave of support from the liberal media and celebrities in Hollywood,” Handel said in an email to supporters. “In fact, just this morning we learned that Hollywood celebrity Alyssa Milano is working to elect Nancy Pelosi’s handpicked candidate right here in Georgia. That’s right – Hollywood is all-in on electing Ossoff.”
Yup, Nancy Pelosi’s handpicked candidate. How awful.
Here’s a Republican attack ad against Mr. Ossoff warning voters that he’s young, and was once younger. The horror.
