Yes, denial, fear, disbelief and a slew of other words. Another word is “reality.” It is a reality that Donald J. Trump is going to be president of the United States. It is a reality that much is at stake in the next few years, but also that democracies offer many tools, not necessarily just elective office, to fight the things we oppose and promote the things we desire.
Was there racism, xenophobia, and sexism at work in Trump’s election? Yes, of course. Was there also an expression of hopelessness and helplessness on the part of so many who do not believe they are being heard? Yes, again.
Progressives have always had a difficult time convincing the less affluent, and many of the generally marginalized, that we are on their side.
I think ultimately Trump will make it easier for us to make our case.
Denial won’t work. The facts are what they are. Time to get to work.
