What do voters think honesty means?

imageWhat does it mean that Donald Trump has opened up an eight point lead on Hillary Clinton on the issue of honesty, according to a new ABC poll? Trump is a racist, sexist, misogynist bully who may frequently says what’s on his mind, but so what?

Hillary Clinton is a trained professional public servant, well conversant in the art of diplomacy and politics. She may shade her message in different ways when talking to different audiences, which is, my little chickadees, the way the world works.

I get that a lot of people don’t like politics because it involves pandering, and careful attention to how things are said and done. And I’m sorry if some people are uncomfortable with what it takes to get things done. Maybe I even agree that there is much that is unfortunate in politics.

But simply because Trump holds so many obnoxious views, and simply because holding such obnoxious views is inconsistent with pandering, does not mean his “honesty” is a virtue.

I know more than a few people who are more direct than they should be, and I typically cross the sidewalk when I see them coming. I certainly wouldn’t vote for them for anything.
