This is not good. Not good at all

imagePer the New York Times:

Federal law enforcement officials said Friday that the new emails uncovered in the closed investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server were discovered after the F.B.I. seized electronic devices belonging to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Mrs. Clinton, and her husband, Anthony Weiner.

The F.B.I. is investigating illicit text messages that Mr. Weiner sent to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina. The bureau told Congress on Friday that it had uncovered new emails related to the Clinton case — one federal official said they numbered in the thousands — potentially reigniting an issue that has weighed on the presidential campaign and offering a lifeline to Donald J. Trump less than two weeks before the election.

The ick-factor alone ought to be enough to keep Hillary awake at night. I doubt this will change much, though it could have a down-ballot impact if it cuts significantly into her margin of victory.

A few weeks ago a smart commentator, probably Steve Schmidt, said that whenever the focus is on Trump, his numbers go down, and the same has been true for Clinton. There will be more focus on this one because of the hint of sex, the media’s favourite topic.

One wag on Twitter wrote that the fact Anthony Weiner is still alive is proof, contrary to alt-right conspiracy theories, that the Clintons don’t actually kill people.

Someone else suggested that the House of Cards writing team would reject this scenario as implausible.

And I was so looking forward to a weekend of political triumphalism.
