This Day in American History: September 21, 1780 – American Revolutionary War, Benedict Arnold Gives the British the plans to West Point


imageBenedict Arnold met British officer John Andre on the shore near Haverstraw, New York on this day. Arnold, who was the Colonial commander of West Point, provided papers indicating the placement of troops and other compromising information. A few days latter Andre was captured by three Colonial volunteers though Arnold had left him by then and was not taken.

Andre was hanged as a spy at Tappan, New York on October 2, 1780. This picture depicts his capture.
