There is a lot in the media this month about WWI as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the “war to end all wars.” For my own part, I’ve chosen to read Margaret MacMillan’s wonderful The War That Ended Peace. My general sense is that I’m amazed any of us are still alive, such is the stupidity of those who traditionally have access to the implements of mass destruction.
I can’t say that I ever wondered if colour photography was around in 1914-18, but it was. In fact a new book will soon be out with just such images.
This is a rather striking picture of a little girl somewhere in France, with soldiers’ gear at her feet.
