Who: The Bruce Braley (D) U.S. Senate Campaign
What: You may have seen Joni Ernst’s (R) by now famous hog ad (I’ve posted it below in case you have not). You know, it’s all about castrating pigs and cutting pork in Washington. She is the Republican candidate for an open Iowa Senate seat, having won the nomination impressively. Bruce Braley is the Democrat in the race.
In Braley’s response to the Ernst ad, it says this:
We’ve all heard the one about pigs squealing. But when Joni Ernst had the chance to do something in Iowa, we didn’t hear a peep. In the state Senate, Ernst never sponsored a bill to cut pork. Never wrote one measure to slash spending. The Iowa Republican said she backed measures to actually increase spending. Joni Ernst ads are hard to forget, but her record just doesn’t cut it.
This race should be a Democratic win with some in the party thinking, as the Des Moines Register writes, Ernst’s “hog castrating, pistol-packing image that was wildly popular in her ads will make her a joke to general election voters.” Working for her is the continuing unpopularity of Obama and his health care legislation in the state.
Amazing that Democrats so often have to campaign like the Republican opponent isn’t a real fiscal conservative implying, I suppose, that the Democrat is. Just what we need.
Grade: Knowing nothing about farming, or what constitutes a good agriculture joke, I’ll defer on that point. Something tells me that Braley still pulls this out. The ad is effective enough. C+
